Today has been reserved for me to get a bunch of writing done, so my presence online may be spotty throughout the day, with occasional pop-ins to report progress.
First up, is the long WIP, which will pass its halfway mark this morning. I am in what novelists called “the middle muddle”, or something like that, but I’ve pushed through what I think is the tough part and now I’m excited about what I am writing each day.
Once I’m satisfied with my progress on the long WIP, I plan on turning to a new short story I’ve been working on, a baseball-science fiction-mystery mashup, and do a little more work on that one. I’ve been so focused on the long story that I haven’t actually completed a piece of short fiction this year, despite having written more than 131,000 words since the end of February. I added a thousand words to this story yesterday and had a blast doing it.
With the new fiction complete, I need to turn to revisions. I have a story that is coming out at the end of the year, for which I need to turn in revisions by the end of the month. Of course, at the end of the month, I’ll be at Worldcon in San Antonio, and so I’d like to have the revisions finished well before then. Also, the editor will be at Worldcon and I’d like to be able to look him in the eye without feeling guilty.
When I’ve made my way through the revisions, I have a nonfiction article to write. These generally write themselves. I find writing nonfiction so much easier than fiction. This is, perhaps, because of this blog. When you’ve written more than 5,000 blog posts over a span of 8 years, you develop a voice and a style that becomes second nature.
I don’t actually expect to get all of these things finished today, but on the rare occasions in which I have the better part of a day to write, I try to make the most of it.
