Happy hour!

The day started out with a doctor appointment to make sure that the developing baby is developing well.  All is good.  It was a long appointment and I didn’t get into the office until almost 1 PM.

After work, a bunch of us headed to Capital City Brewery in Shirlington for happy hour.  Kelly and I got there around 5:30 and stayed until about 9 PM and we had a great time.  There must have been 15 people there, and one of our friends works there so she would come and say hello to us from time-to-time.  Good company, good food, good beer, good times.

Wednesday happy hour

Just back from a rare Wednesday happy hour. A bunch of us went to Champps: me, Kelly, Carmen, Leanna, Paraag, Sam, John, Cassandra, Courtney, and several new people. It was a lot of fun. We hung out, joking around, talking. I had some chicken strips. Kelly teased me for occasionally looking up at the TVs to catch the Red Sox score while we were talking. I couldn’t help it. I’m terrible at dividing my attention. (But at least the Red Sox were losing.)

Spoke briefly to strausmouse this evening and then managed to walk right onto a Yellow Line train without having to wait so I was home at around 9:20-ish or so.

No mail of interest today.

Zeke was happy to see me when I got home, but I noticed he’d thrown up a little bit at some point in the day. He seemed fine, happy, active, so his problems from a few years back (when he would throw up and then have breathing problems) don’t seem to be an issue at the moment. I’m kind of glad I wasn’t home for it because I always get really anxious when he gets sick.

I’m beat. Don’t know why but I’ve been tired all day. I’m off to bed.

Busy day and happy hour

I was busy today and didn’t have much time to post. I did get out of the office by 4:30, however, and headed over to the Crystal City Sports Pub for Happy Hour. I was there with John and Leanna and Leanna’s brother and Kelly. The rest of the usual crowd wasn’t around and we only stayed for a few hours before breaking up and heading home.

When I got home, the final installment of the Harry Potter saga was waiting for me, having been shipped from Amazon. I still have to finish Book Six and I’m in the middle of Up From Dragons. I will have something more to say on reading shortly.

Stay tuned…

Pictures from happy hour

Happy hour was a lot of fun last night. We went to Crystal City Sports Pub again and this time, we had the second floor balcony all to ourselves. I drank half a shot more than I intended to thanks to a fair amount of peer pressure, but I still had a lot of fun. It was an early night for me though because I had to get up early this morning to do a bunch of errands. I left around 10 PM and there were still a bunch of people there when I left.

There are lots of pictures. The entire gallery is here. But here are a few that I particularly liked:

Here I am pretty excited that I am on vacation for a month!

Ain’t they just a cute couple?

Here’s a good shot of a bunch of us.

Aren’t they just adorable!

I was home by 11 PM and slept pretty well. I woke up at 5 AM feeling a little bit of a headache, but it passed. I finally got up around 7:30 this morning.

Just back from happy hour

We went to Crystal City Sports Pub for happy hour tonight and it was a lot of fun. It started with me and Leanna and Susan and eventually, Carmen, Kelly, Todd, Jesseca, Paraag, Sam, Jason, and Patricia showed up. We started sitting outside and ended up upstairs. Everyone was drinking in great quantity and having a raving good time.

Sometime around 11 PM, we decided to head to the diner next door and we all had some sort of breakfast dish. I had scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns and 2 pancakes and I wolfed most of it down quickly. I also drank a ton and a half of water.

After that, I was ready to go home, but a bunch of people were going over to Jesseca’s for a while and so I went with them. I finally left her place at 1 AM. Kelly gave me a ride to the Pentagon City metro station and I took the trains home from there.

I just got home and it’s almost 2:30 AM–the longest I have stayed out on a Friday–and a very long day for me since I got up at 5:30 this morning. I’m beat now and heading off to bed and planning on sleeping in late tomorrow. But still, it was lots of fun!

Pre-happy hour

The big (and now regular) happy hour is tomorrow after work, but because softball practice was canceled today (and a good thing, too, since it rained), Carmen, Leanna and I headed over to Champps for some drinks after work today. Leanna and I got there around 4:45 and Carmen showed up half an hour later. I stayed until 8:30. By then, John and Jesseca had also come by. I didn’t drink very much. (It’s a school night.) But it was a lot of fun, as usual.

I got home at 9 PM and found the September issue of ANALOG waiting for me. There was still some light in the sky (and would have been even more without the lingering rain clouds). When the train crossed the Potomac on the way home, the sun was just beginning to set, and surrounded by storm clouds, it looked impressive.

Seven more work-days until vacation!

Happy hours

One of the reasons I fought off my dizzy-spell earlier today was that I didn’t want to miss happy hour this evening. It turned out to be a fun one. It started out at Crystal City Sports Pub with me and Leanna and Carmen and Kelly. We were there for a few hours and then decided to head over to the Ugly Mug in Eastern Market. On the way, I stopped back at work to pick up Kent, who is in town for a few weeks working on a project, and he came along with us. We were there for an hour or two and, among other things, I got to see the Yankees lose to the Mets.

I got home just after midnight, but I had a lot of fun.

Abbreviated Happy Hour

This was a long, busy week at work so several of us decided to head out for an abbreviated happy hour. Leanna, Carmen, Todd, Paraag and myself headed to Champps and chatted over a few beers before we all split up for the weekend. It was very hot and humid out today and the beers helped to cool things down.

I got home around 7:30 PM and straightened up the house in preparation for Jen and Jason’s arrival later tonight. In fact, I got home just in time to watch the space shuttle Atlantis launch, the first shuttle launch of 2007.

Jen and Jason are due in sometime between 10 and 11 PM. I’m going to drive out to Bethesda to pick them up from the bus stop because at that time of night, it’s faster to drive than for them to take the train.

When I got home this evening, the skies opened up briefly for a passing thunderstorm. It poured for a few minutes, and then just as quickly, the sun came out again. It rained long enough for my car to get a decent washing, however.

I’m on vacation three weeks from tonight!

Happy Hour!

We had a fun happy hour tonight. It was a long work day. I wore shorts to work today, mainly because yesterday my scraped-up knee kept rubbing up inside my jeans yesterday and I wanted it to breath today so that it could scab over. Anyway, it was good because it was hot. I had meetings all afternoon and so I was glad when 5 PM rolled around and a bunch of us headed over to Champps.

We spent about 4 hours there and had a great time. Afterward, we headed over to Paraag’s place and hung out there for a few hours. We were all supposed to go to Dr. Dreamo’s after that to meet up, but it was already 10:30 PM and I was pretty tired so I decided to head home instead.

I got home just after midnight, but it was a lot of fun. We’re hoping to do it a few more times before I head off on vacation.

Late night, late morning

Happy hour began at 5:30 PM last night and ended with me getting home at 1 AM. In between, we found ourselves at 2 bars, one in Pentagon Row, then other on 23rd street in Crystal City. I had more to drink than I intended, but I stopped drinking alcohol before we left the first bar and drank nothing but Sprite and water thereafter. When I finally got home, I drank an additional two thirds of a liter of water and I felt no deleterious after-effects. I did, however, sleep in this morning, staying in bed until a remarkable (for me) 10:30 AM.

It was a fun evening, but there is one problem with bars in Virginia and that is that they all allow smoking. Aside from the obvious health reasons, I hate this because your clothes wreak of smoke thereafter. And when you spend 6+ hours at said bars, your hair and skin also begin to smell of smoke. When I got home, I tossed my clothes in the laundry (I considered just finishing the job and burning them) and then got into the shower. When you are tired, it’s no fun getting into the shower but I did not want to go to bed smelling like smoke.

When I finally got up, I headed out to get some breakfast. I think I have some yard work to this weekend. The lawn is definitely going to need a mowing. I have other errands to run as well. Fortunately, it’s nice out today and for now, I think I’m going to sit out in the front yard and read for a while.

March madness

Apparently, we have entered a phenomenon known as March Madness, as evidence by the seemingly dozens of college basketball games on in the bar last night during happy hour. People really get into this March Madness. There are these “bracket” boards all over the place and people try to guess who will end up as the final two teams to play one another when all other teams have been eliminated. There is a kind of mad, drunken obsession with these games, which perhaps explains the term itself. I just don’t get it. Basketball never seemed that exciting to me (although it’s better than football). But all of this hubbub over college games? I wouldn’t even know who to cheer for. I suppose I could cheer for Maryland, since that’s where I live. But it seems to be the better bet would be on UCLA. Granted, I didn’t got to UCLA, but I did got to UCR, and besides, UCLA, UCR, UCI, UCSB, UCSD, they are all just “annex” schools of Cal anyway, right?

I did have fun at happy hour last night, despite the basketball madness. It was a “going away” party for someone and we were there for hours. I finally ended up leaving just before 10 PM and I got home as the clock struck 11 PM.

I was up just after 8 this morning. I have a number of things to do this weekend, not the least of which is preparing all of my tax information and getting it sent out to my new tax adviser. I’m nearly 200 pages through Houdini and hoping to make some headway there as well. And I’d like to get through a few more Italian lessons this weekend if I could.

Incidentally, it’s exactly ONE WEEK from Norm and Vicky’s wedding in Orlando. I still have a few things to do in preparation for that. I leave on Wednesday and I have to get a shirt pressed. On second thought, I’ll probably just buy a new shirt. My neck size has grown some in the last few months and those 15-1/2 next sized shirts strangle me when they are buttoned up. I think I need to move up to a 16 or 16-1/2.

Happy hour!

We headed over to Champps for happy hour at about 5 PM. Todd, John, Leanna, me, Carmen, Kristy, Todd, etc. We sat at the bar for a while where I had a 22-ounce Bud Lite and a shot of Patron. Eventually (once everyone else arrived) we got a table. I ordered the New York strip (12-oz) and it was surprisingly good for a place like Champps. With it, I had 2 mai-tais that seemed unusually strong to me, as if the bartenders were not used to making them. Still, they were tasty. We finally left the bar around 9:30 and I came back up to my office to cool off for a while before I caught the train home. I’ll probably be here for a little while longer.
