Scheduled downtime for this site December 2-3 (approx. 3-12 hours)

I have recently noticed that at times, this site is pretty slow. Sometimes, it seems almost unaccessible. I inquired with my hosting service and they indicated that the premium servers (on which my site resides) are getting slow due to high volume. They are going to be moving all of their premium users to a new server system before the end of the year. I was offered an opportunity to do the move myself to help minimize the overall downtime and that is what I have decided to do. The step that causes the most significant potential downtime is rolling over the name servers so that the domain points to the new servers.

Given what is involved, I have decided to attempt this cut-over Friday/Saturday December 2-3. I chose this weekend because I believe it will minimize the overall impact. It is an off weekend for my Vacation in the Golden Age posts, for instance. I will do most of the work Friday evening and then cut over to the new DNS servers Friday night. I’m told that it can take anywhere from 3-12 hours for the new servers to propagate through the interwebs so from a period Friday night, December 2 through sometime on Saturday, December 3, this site will likely be inaccessible.

When the site does come back up, it should be exactly the same as it is now. The most significant change for you (I hope) will be better performance. (There are some back-end enhancements that will make it easier for me to manage the site, but you won’t see those.)

I will post a reminder before I start work, and I will keep folks updated via Twitter during the time in which the change-over is taking place. This post is just a heads-up to let you know what is coming in a little less than 2 weeks.
