The Complete Far Side and Other Goodies

When I arrived home from work today, an order that I had placed at Amazon had finally arrived. I used a gift card that I got for Christmas to get myself something that I have been drooling over for a long time: The Complete Far Side by Gary Larson. This is a massive, coffee table-sized 2-volume set that contains every single Far Side cartoon (more than 4,300 of them), plus lots of articles and commentary. It comes in a gorgeous box:

Inside the box are two volumes, covering 1980-1986 and 1987-1994:

The books themselves are massive–and beautiful:

And they look even better inside:

The Far Side is my all-time favorite cartoon. I’m not sure that I’ve seen every comic Larson produced, but I will get the chance to see them all now. I can’t wait to start pouring through these volumes.

In the same shipment, I also received The Bill James Handbook for 2013, which is for baseball fans, what the World Almanac is for everyone else. It’s another book I can’t wait to flip through.

  1. High above the hushed crowed Rex tried to focus, but he had one nagging doubt. He was an old dog and this was a new trick. – favourite of his cartoons.

  2. When I was a kid, my family moved around a lot but the one book that always survived the trip was The Far Side Gallery 2. Without it, I wouldn’t have even considered writing.
