BREAKING NEWS: We are having a baby!

I didn’t want to bury the lead. Kelly is pregnant and we are indeed having another baby. The Little Man will be a big brother. We had our second doctor appointment today and everything is looking perfect. Since Kelly is now entering her second trimester, we felt it was time to make the announcement. Of course, we are both very excited about this and we’ve been trying to explain things to the Z-man these last couple of months, but I’m not sure he gets it yet. He looks at us like we’re crazy when we tell him there’s a baby in mommy’s tummy.

But let me try and read your minds:

When is the baby due?

August 27th is the current arrival date. Like last time, it will be a planned c-section. Unlike last time, Kelly will have to cope with a hot, humid summer during the third trimester. 🙁

How is Kelly doing?

Like last time, the first trimester was pretty rough. Lots of nausea and yuckiness, coupled with feeling tired. But we can both tell that this is coming to an end. Kelly has been feeling much better the last week or so and the morning sickness has regressed and gotten more and more infrequent. Last time around, the second trimester was much more pleasant and that’s what we are hoping here.

When did you guys find out?

We found out on Christmas Eve day, so it was a nice little Christmas present for all of us.

Since you already have a boy, are you hoping for a girl this time?

A girl would be nice because we’d have one of each. A boy would be nice because we know how that goes and we have everything we need. However, the practical truth is that when we bought our house, there were three upstairs bedrooms: the master bedroom, a blue room and a pink room. Only the pink room remains empty and I am in no mood to repaint, so a girl would be convenient.

Are you going to find out the sex of the baby or are you going to be surprised?

Regardless of when you find out the sex of the baby, as soon as possible or at birth, I think you are always “surprised”. That said, practical people that we are, we’ll be finding out as soon as we can, which may be sometime in late March. I’m not quite sure.

Do you have names picked out

We’ve talked about some names but haven’t settled on anything yet. Fortunately, we have time. Until then, we are referring to s/he as The Sibling To Be Named Later.

Any more kids planned?

No. As Kelly likes to say, two kids are perfect for two parents because it is man-to-man. Anything more than two and you’ve got to play zone defense. I don’t think either of us have the energy for that.

We’ll keep you posted going forward, but we’re glad to finally be able to share the news with our friends at large.

Oh, and I dropped a very subtle hint on this in an earlier post today. Go back and re-read that post. I’ve highlighted the “subtle” part.

  1. Congratulations, Jamie! This is wonderful news. I know just how you feel on the boy/girl thing. And I find it endlessly amusing that you speak of ‘man-to-man’ and ‘zone defense’ – you sound just like my husband. Hugs for both of you, and I’m so glad Kelly’s pulling out of 1st trimester. 1st trimester is just…rough.

    1. Thanks, Juliette! I have to give credit to Kelly, though, for the man-to-man and zone-defense analogies. They are hers. (I’m a baseball fan and find all of these basketball and football references alien.) In the meantime, I’m trying to cram in as much writing as I can between now and August, because I’m sure I’ll have to slow down for a little while once August rolls around.
