30 day song challenge, day 3: a song that makes you happy

27 Apr 2011 » 1 min read » Filed under: music

Finally! An easy and straight-forward category that I don’t have to put much thought into because I know the answer without thinking about it. A song that always makes me happy is:

The Main Street Electrical Parade

I have some friends who will think this is a good choice, and others who will think I’ve gone around the bend. But whenever I heard this song, it always puts a little extra pep in my step, and it always makes me smile. The irony is that I don’t particularly like the song. But music toys with emotions and you don’t have to love or hate a song for it to bring out those emotions in you. In this case, hearing the song makes me happy. What I wonder is how much of that response is chemical, something about the notes that cause a certain reaction in my brain chemistry that generates that happy feeling. I wonder if anyone has ever investigated such an effect?
