• Tornado watch in Arlington County

    16 Nov 2006 » 1 min read

It appears that there is a tornado watch in effect for Arlington County (where I work) as well as large portions of Metro-DC including Riverdale, Maryland, where I live until 6 PM. Looking out my office window, it’s drizzling out, but the sky hasn’t gone all Wizard of Oz yet.

  • Grandpa

    16 Nov 2006 » 1 min read

It was two years ago today that my Grandpa, Paul Friedlander, passed away. I mentioned a few days ago how I found a tape of him, when I interviewed him for a profile I was doing back in college for my journalism minor. I only listened to a short snippet of the tape, but maybe…

  • Out of the past

    16 Nov 2006 » 1 min read

I woke up this morning to find an email from a computer teacher I had in 9th grade back at George K. Porter Middle School (back when it was George K. Porter Junior High School). He has recently retired and he’s been in touch with my friend Noah and it was through Noah that he…

  • Funny, alternate reality, song lyrics

    16 Nov 2006 » 1 min read about Music & Arts

Sometimes, I mis-hear a song lyric intentionally because it sounds funnier the way I hear it, instead of the way it is sung. For example, just now, I was listening to my 80s playlist and Paul Yound’s “Every Time You Go Away” was playing. Don’t worry you’d know it if you heard it. Anyway, the…

  • Patterns and practices

I have a routine in the morning and like any routine, it’s good because it prevents me from forgetting things. (In 12 years at my job, I’ve forgotten my badge exactly 3 times.) The problem with a routine is that if you break it in even the slightest way, it can lead to trouble. This…

I forgot to pack my lunch today (read: I was too lazy) and so at noon I found myself with nothing to eat, and with no desire to head down into the mall and stand in lines to pay lots of money for bad mall food. Fortunately, a coworker, who sits outside my office, told…

  • The Paranoid/Stalker Dream

    15 Nov 2006 » 1 min read

Last night I had one of those eerie, unsettling dreams that isn’t quite a nightmare, but that leaves you feeling somewhat off-center. In the dream, I was walking up a ramp leading up to a hilltop. The ramp was something out of a Dr. Seuss story, with lots of curves and switchbacks to it. It…

  • Rollback

    15 Nov 2006 » 1 min read about Reading & Books

I finished Robert J. Sawyer‘s serialized novel Rollback earlier this evening and it was terrific. Although I complained about the wait between each part of the story, it turned out to be totally worth the wait. This was a good science fiction story. In some ways, it reminded me of Isaac Asimov’s fiction, for instance,…

Lazy Saturday Afternoon Originally uploaded by jamietr. Eric requested that I post some pictures from this weekend, so here are some pictures from this weekend. Most of the pictures are from “game night” Saturday night, but there are a few others. All pictures are courtesy of Norm (of vickyandnorm fame). To be honest, I stole…
